Into Eternity: A Film for the Future (2010) - Into.

A documentary that feels at times like an essay or an installation or a science fiction movie, Into Eternity is Danish artist Michael Madsen’s philosophical, poetic and practical encounter with an extremely urgent question: what is to be done with nuclear waste?

The film, which is more an essay in the form of a letter to future generations, is a trippy affair with some of the most haunting marriages of image and music you are likely to find. The film masterfully ponders what are our options for waste such as this and how do we protect our children's children's children from its dangers. I love how.

What they find on the other side is not the proper business of a reviewer to reveal. How they come back, however, deserves some comment, because the movie engages in plot manipulation.

MacShane's fourth biography (the others treated Ford, Chandler, and O'Hara) is a slack, puffy piece of business—reading half like an official Soviet biography of a peasant farm-hero, half like a too-slick apology for its subject's short fallings. And Jones, as a subject for a straight literary bio (unlike Leggett's cautionary tale Ross and Tom of some years ago), had shortfallings aplenty.

According to an expert interviewed in the mesmerizing conceptual documentary Into Eternity, the world currently has between 250,000 and 300,000 tons of high-level nuclear waste. The radiation from that waste is toxic to human beings, and it’s estimated that exposure to it will be a danger for at least 100,000 years. Currently, radioactive waste is being placed in interim storage like water.

When the crowd gathered to see the hangman launching teenager Robert Smith into eternity on a wet Tuesday in 1868, it was the last time this public spectacle would be witnessed in Scotland. Smith's crime was heinous, his public punishment brutal. And, finally, it was the end of a tragic public theatre which had drawn eager, baying crowds for more than a thousand years. Launched Into Eternity.

Michael Madsen’s documentary, Into Eternity, describes the epistemological discussion behind Finland’s Onkalo waste repository, designed to last 100,000 years.Zachary Block spoke with the director about this haunting documentary, screening now at Film Forum in New York.

We have turned the Earth into a bomb. Nuclear waste remains dangerous for 100,000 years, and we have no good way of storing it. The Finnish government has decided to build a longterm subterranean storage facility called Onkalo, which apparently literally means “cavern” but which Madsen says means “hiding place.” A great subject for a documentary, right? Unfortunately, Into Eternity is.

I saw the well-reviewed documentary “Into Eternity” last week, and was not too impressed, though I don’t quite regret the two hours. There has to be some excuse for making a movie out of what might be a thousand-word essay; and “Into Eternity” does not offer that kind of visual or experiential payoff.
